The Executive Director of 'Thailand Earth', Penchom Saetang, one of the organizations that gave the signal that 800 tons of waste were entering Thailand, which later turned out to have been sent from Albania, gave an interview to Syri Tv where she admitted that the ships with the toxic waste they came from Albania, but the name of the company is not yet known.
She stated that there were several cases where they tried to transport waste.
Saetang said there are documents that the toxic waste load originated from Albania.
"It is suspected that not only are these hazardous wastes in violation of the Basel convention in Thailand, however we suspect that it is illegal, and we are trying to check who is responsible for importing them, but so far we have no information about with the company name.
And as far as waste in Thailand is concerned, we have recently received information from the Customs Department showing that from last year to the beginning of this year there have been hundreds of cases of illegal movement of illegal waste and it has been listed in the Customs Department and is made efforts to return to the country of origin. So there were hundreds of cases.
We have spoken with the Department of Industrial Affairs who told us that in 2022 there was a request from a company in Albania that wanted to export red powder to Thailand but this request was rejected by the Thai authorities, and this is the time the first time I have heard of such a request for a company application in Albania.
We don't have the name of the company, but maybe the Industrial Department has the name.
They are dust of electrical materials or we call it red dust, which comes from steel furnaces, the dust contains some types of heavy metals such as steel dust and cadmium. And the dust also carries high levels of oxides due to the source of the dust which comes from melting steel.
Heavy metals can cause some diseases, for example, red dust causes some types of cancer and diseases related to various poisonings.
The dust must be stored or kept in the warehouse, not outside because this type of waste is dangerous and can be transformed according to different methods that can give health impacts. The storage of these wastes must be in indoor environments with good environmental management.
The recycling of this type of waste causes pollution and pollution is one of the biggest risks, so the plants that process it are the ones who must also recycle the red dust.
Actually in Thailand we already have a problem with red dust management, every year about 100 thousand tons of dust are generated from factories inside Thailand and this is a problem in the country, so importing red dust into our country is illegal and there are strict state controls on the recycling of this dust.
We try to do campaigns for the exit of dust from factories and when it comes to import from Albania, actions must be taken to stop this import.
The evidence we have is from the operational documents, the departure of the waste from Albania, so the documents show that it was started from Durrës, on July 4 and 9," said Saetang. / CNA
