Territorial reform/ Berisha: Rama is continuing the depopulation project

During his speech in the Assembly, the leader of the Democrat Party, Sali Berisha, spoke about territorial and electoral reform. Berisha accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of continuing with his project to depopulate the country.

According to him, the Socialist Party has envisaged a reduction of 25 municipalities from Konispol to Kruma. According to him, this is a clear practice of depopulation.

"Honorable deputies, the truth is that despite the fact that this parliament absolutely does not represent the will of Albanian citizens, the EU, in the integration process, at the top of the list, defined two main tasks: comprehensive electoral reform and comprehensive territorial reform. Convinced that with Edi Rama there is only anti-reform, but in support of the demands of numerous citizens from across the country, in support of our efforts for a free and fair electoral process, we participated in the two groups established for these fundamental reforms.

With one condition: for the electoral reform, the expertise of the ODIHR should be obtained, for the territorial reform, the expertise of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe should be obtained. The truth is that the representatives of the opposition in these committees have made a very valuable contribution. But above all, they have been spokespersons for the interests of the citizens. The government of the Swiss Confederation, but also the EU representative in Tirana, have shown full support and great interest in these two reforms.

Suddenly, Edi Rama withdraws de facto from the territorial reform and closes the process by continuing his project of further complete depopulation of Albania. He has foreseen the reduction of 25 municipalities from Konispol to Krumë throughout the country. And this constitutes a clear practice of depopulation. Therefore, I am here to address the Albanian citizens: stand up to protect the vital interests of your communities. A civic protest, unprecedented in 30 years, gathers every night in the streets and squares of Tirana, join this protest to protect the most vital interests of your communities", said Berisha. /CNA
