Rama Kunja: Politics is not done with followers and likes, they serve the

Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that politics today cannot be built on the basis of social networks, emphasizing that the influence of "followers" and "likes" is often overestimated and linked to the mechanisms of digital platforms.

In a public statement, Rama stated that there is a very profitable industry that, according to him, operates through social media algorithms, which reward conflict and not calm or reason.

"In our time, we are faced with an industry, an industry that is very profitable. Whoever thinks that with his likes and followers he does politics or only does politics is mistaken; with the followers and likes he collects he does the service of the biggest oligarchs on the planet, who through the algorithm enrich themselves every day. The algorithm does not reward the calmness of reason. Calmness is the enemy of the algorithm.

The algorithm doesn't like reason, and that's why, with all the studies done, all posts on all platforms that are boring have a much slower spread than those that are engaging because they're outrageous. The algorithm is there to reward conflict. It rewards the outrage and intimidation of others.

Intimidation produces clicks, clicks produce time and time produces money. For the first time in history, the attention economy has become a political economy: the more anger, the more visibility, the more influence, and the more influence, the more power over the algorithmic scheme. Today, protests do not only take place in squares, but they need a square for representation in a kennel that protests the algorithm. The square is simply a television studio of the algorithm. It is the place where it is filmed to feed the algorithm and to illustrate it. This is where the challenge for today's democracy begins", said Rama./ CNA
