Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted after the statement of the Union of Albanian Journalists regarding the language used during the protests and clashes with citizens or individuals who did not join the protest.
Through a post on social media, Rama emphasized that the Union of Albanian Journalists has no connection with the government, underlining that the organization has held critical positions towards it before.
However, he decided to publish the Union's statement, as according to him it addresses a serious concern that has emerged during the protests of recent weeks.
Rama underlines that some of the protesters are displaying bullying and aggressive behavior, which he described as an expression of a “fascist spirit” on social media and in public gatherings. According to Rama, this spirit has also materialized in reported incidents on the road, where some drivers have faced violence after not reacting to the protesters’ demands.
"The Albanian Journalists' Union has no connection with the government, except in cases where it has made negative statements about the government!"
"But I am posting the attached statement of the Union because it is related to the most important and most disturbing truth of the protest of recent weeks: The fascist spirit of a large number of online bullies, which is the dominant spirit of the protest, which is also materialized in the bullying crowd of marchers in the streets. In the video, it is precisely the latter who beat up drivers last night because they did not honk their horns, according to the orders of this group of two-legged jackals," Rama writes.
Statement by the Albanian Journalists Union
Derogatory language, attacks and verbal aggression against journalists by individuals at protests and especially on social media, constitutes a public criminal act.
Tirana on June 16, 2026
The Union of Albanian Journalists supports and appreciates the free civic protests of the last two weeks. We appreciate the way in which protests are being held and the freedom of expression that is embodied, in many cases so dignified, by the speeches of many citizens and intellectuals.
This is a movement that strengthens democracy in Albanian society, which the political parties keep in the status of "hybrid democracy". Meanwhile, this movement and the protests so far, in our view, are marking a contribution to a European Albania, to a society that deserves all freedoms and especially the liberation of the system trapped in the status quo where the two political parties keep it.
The Union of Albanian Journalists is at the same time very concerned by the individual acts of lynching of several journalists who share different public opinions and positions on issues, political actors and their analyses.
