Floods in the Maliq field/ Farmers appeal to the state for help

After heavy rainfall in recent days, the Maliqi plain has been affected by significant flooding, causing serious damage to agricultural lands and crops. Farmers in the area express great concern about the situation, which, according to them, is worsening by the hour. One of them, Agron Guri, says that a good part of the areas planted with potatoes and wheat are under water. He says that he has invested large amounts of money in production, but already part of the land has been completely damaged and the rest is at risk of being destroyed if the rainfall continues. According to him, dozens of other farmers are in the same situation and state assistance is necessary.

"I have 20 hectares here, so far 7 hectares have been completely flooded and it is still ongoing. The water is still flowing towards Nizhavec. I have planted 15 hectares of wheat, where 8 hectares are at risk after potatoes. We are in a very big trouble. There are many farmers affected by the floods. I have rented land to 50-60 people, some of them have passed away, some have emigrated. I work the lands. The state should come and help us because we are finished, " said farmer Agron Guri.

Meanwhile, Bashkim Guri, another farmer in the area, claims that the floods have blocked the corn harvest, while other products are still unsold in the warehouse. He says that the damage to his lands is estimated at several million lek and the situation, if the rains continue, could become even more serious. According to him, many farmers are on the verge of bankruptcy and will not be able to continue working next year without the support of institutions.

" I have corn now that I removed the onion, I have it in storage without selling it. The corn remained unharvested because the land was flooded by the rain. The state should come and see how our situation is. 15 dunyams of corn were flooded for me, the damage amounts to 2 and a half million so far. If it still rains, there is a risk. We are all in a catastrophe, I can't continue anymore because I don't have a budget. The state should help us because this is our problem."

Farmers are demanding urgent intervention from authorities to assess the damage and provide assistance, in order to avoid a deeper economic crisis in one of the country's most important agricultural areas./ CNA
