Tirana on 3.11.2024

The Union of Albanian Journalists considers the blocking of reporters and media operators of Albania at the border point of Kapshtica, on Saturday 2.11.2024, a shameful act and a violation of EU norms for the free movement of citizens and especially journalists.

The detention for about three hours, at the border point of a group of reporters and operators of Albania's main media, constitutes an unacceptable act against bilateral and community rules and norms.

The claim of border control employees, from the Greek side, that a verbal note is needed from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania, next to the Greek counterpart ministry, is simply a bureaucratic trick and causes the repetition of a precedent similar to past periods.

The obstruction of the group of journalists from Albania is being noted as a bitter act that happened often in the past.

UGSH addresses sister organizations in Greece and international organizations of journalists with the appeal to denounce this case and bring attention to some repeated behavior of the Greek authorities towards Albanian journalists, through which it is proven that some of them are marked as "undesirable " for some institutions, while there are still colleagues who remain declared "non grata" officially. Such acts and practices against journalists damage the neighborhood, the principles, the rules of relations between two countries belonging to the EU and fundamental freedoms," the announcement states./ CNA
