Safety measures for teenagers/ Rules change on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger

Tech company Meta is expanding its safety measures for teens on Instagram with a live broadcast block, as the social platform company extends its under-18 safeguards to its Facebook and Messenger platforms.

Users under 16 will be banned from using Instagram's Live feature without parental permission. They will also need parental permission to disable a feature that blurs images containing inappropriate content in their direct messages.

The changes were announced alongside the expansion of Instagram's teen account system to Facebook and Messenger. Teen accounts were introduced last year and were set to under 18 by default in a setting that includes giving parents the ability to set daily time limits on app usage, block teens from using Instagram during certain times, and see the accounts their child is messaging.

Teen accounts on Facebook and Messenger will be changed first in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. As with Instagram accounts, users under 16 will need parental permission to change settings, while 16- and 17-year-olds who are already on the new features will be able to change them independently.

Meta said that teen Instagram accounts were used by 54 million under-18s worldwide, with more than 90% of 13- to 15-year-olds keeping their default restrictions./CNA
