Messaging app Telegram has finally decided to respond to calls to sign up to child protection schemes, the BBC reports .

"Telegram" has agreed to work with an internationally recognized body to stop the dissemination of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM).

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) is one of the main services on the Internet to prevent the spread of these materials.

Telegram had repeatedly refused to engage with it or any similar scheme.

But four months after its founder Pavel Durov was arrested in Paris for failing to control extreme content, the platform has announced an important decision.

The IWF described Telegram's decision as "transformative" and warned that it was the first step in a "much longer journey" for the app.

"By joining the IIF, Telegram can begin deploying our world-leading tools to ensure that these materials are not shared," said Derek Ray-Hill, Interim CEO at the IIF.

Telegram is used by around 950 million people worldwide and has previously positioned itself as an app focused on the privacy of its users. However, it did not follow the policy norms prioritized by other global social media companies.

In August, the app's billionaire founder was arrested at an airport north of Paris.

Durov is accused of failing to cooperate with law enforcement on drug trafficking, child sexual content and fraud.

This charge was raised after several media outlets reported that they had identified cases where people with criminal records used the application to advertise drugs, provide cybercrime services, and fraud./ CNA
