Meta Company: Political ads on Facebook and Instagram are blocked in Europe

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it will stop offering space for political advertising in the European Union from October, considering the new transparency requirements provided for by European law "unenforceable".

This decision comes ahead of the full implementation of the new Regulation on Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA), which aims to control the way online platforms display political content to users, limiting the phenomena of manipulation and foreign interference in elections, as well as the processing of personal data for the purposes of political advertising.

Although the regulation has already entered into force, its most essential provisions will begin to be implemented from October.

Meta cited "serious operational difficulties and legal uncertainties" stemming from the legislation and announced that it would no longer allow ads related to political, electoral or social issues. However, the decision does not prevent users or candidates from posting political views or engaging in political dialogue on its platforms.

In a statement, the company noted:

“We continue to believe that online political advertising is a vital part of modern political life, allowing citizens to be informed and candidates to communicate directly with their audiences, at low cost.”

Meta's move follows a similar decision by Google, which is also banning political advertising ahead of the new regulation.

It is also worth noting that Meta recently announced that he does not intend to sign the EU Code of Practice on Artificial Intelligence, describing it as legally vague and overly broad in its scope. In contrast, companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have pledged to adopt it. /CNA
