Another surprise at the World Cup, Australia defeats Turkey

The Australian national team has started its participation in the World Cup with a 2-0 victory, defeating Turkey in the first group stage match, held in Vancouver.

The main protagonist of this match was goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who in his debut with the national team developed a high-level performance, being declared the best player of the match.

The first half started with a higher volume of play for Turkey, who took risks through midfielder Arda Guler, whose shots were stopped by the goalkeeper. However, against the flow of the game, Australia managed to break the deadlock before the half-hour mark.

After a long pass from Paul Okon-Engstler, striker Irankunda eluded the Turkish defence and beat goalkeeper Çakir with a low shot. With this achievement, Irankunda became the youngest player to score for Australia in World Cup history.

In the second half, Turkey coach Vincenzo Montela changed the tactical scheme by activating Juventus striker Kenan Yildiz, who was not in the best physical condition to start as a starter. This substitution increased the offensive pressure of Turkey, which came close to equalizing with a deflected shot by Yuksek. On the other side, Tony Popovic's team defended well and responded through defender Sutar, whose header was saved by Çakir.

 


The result of the match was sealed in the 75th minute through a strong shot from outside the area by Metcalfe, which ended in the bottom corner of the Turkish goal.

In the remaining minutes, the Australian goalkeeper made another crucial save on Kerem Akturkoglu, closing the match with eight saves in total. The success gives Australia their first three points ahead of Friday's clash with the USA, while Turkey will look for their first points that evening against Paraguay in Santa Clara.
