Scandal/ Izmir Smajlaj and the leaders of the Athletics Federation are suspended

Izmir Smajlaj and two leaders of the Athletics Federation, Gjergj Ruli and Nikolin Dionisi, may face an expulsion after being accused of falsifying information that helped the athlete go to the Tokyo Olympics.

The Athletics Integrity Unit has stated that they may be punished for disciplinary violations of a competition held in May 2021 in Albania in the long jump.

Smajlaj was declared the winner with a record jump of 8.16 meters and it is said that these results were sent to World Athletics and the AIU so that he could enter the Olympic Games.

Smajlaj's score was not good enough to fully qualify for the Olympics, but he received a spot under the "universality" rule that allows countries to send either a male or a female athlete to the Olympic competitions.

At the Olympics, Smajlaj jumped 7.86 meters and failed to qualify for the final.

The AIU said in September that Albania was one of seven countries on a "competition manipulation watch list" along with Turkey, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.
