Unexpected / The referee who refereed the title match in Albania withdraws

Renowned English referee Anthony Taylor has decided to end his career at the age of 47, retiring from refereeing.

His decision was influenced by the high pressure and constant criticism that accompany this profession at the highest international levels. The last challenge he led was the confrontation between Spain and Portugal in the 1/16 stage of the World Cup.

Before becoming a professional referee and moving up to the Premier League in 2010, Taylor worked as a prison guard. Over a 20-year career, he has refereed 831 matches, including 432 in the English top flight and dozens of international matches in two European Championships and two World Cups.

"The pressure is great and the responsibility is also great. The time has come for me to leave," Taylor said.

For the Albanian sports community, Taylor is also known for establishing justice in the grand final of the championship title in May 2024 between Partizan and Egnatia.
