In the quest for longevity, the real goal isn't to live longer, but better, free of health problems, and that's exactly what Australian researchers think they've discovered.

Is there a way to age but stay healthy, without chronic diseases and illnesses that bother us and reduce our quality of life? Australian researchers believe they have discovered the secret to healthy aging in a "magic" protein located in the "heart" of cells that may play a key role in reversing the aging process.

University of Queensland researchers have discovered that the protein ATSF-1 has the role of a regulator that maintains the balance between the creation of new mitochondria and the repair of damaged ones. The key protein that activates, localizes and repairs damaged mitochondria may also hold the key to antiaging, according to research published in Nature Cell Biology.

Remember that mitochondria are the energy production laboratories of our body. These small organelles within cells are responsible for producing the energy required by the human body. However, over time, the efficiency of mitochondria decreases, resulting in a lack of energy production needed to perform various cellular functions. Additionally, toxic byproducts of mitochondrial activity contribute to the rate of cell aging.

"Under conditions of cellular stress, when mitochondrial DNA is damaged, the ATSF-1 protein undertakes 'repairs' thereby promoting cellular health and longevity," explains Dr Steven Zuryn, Associate Professor at the University of Queensland's Brain Institute./ CNA
