Study: Cycling linked to lower risk of dementia

One study says that eating a cup of chickpeas every day lowered cholesterol in people, and a cup of chickpeas or black beans a day reduced inflammation.
The results reveal how small changes to your diet can translate into significant changes in your health, says Indika Edirisinghe, a nutritionist at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
"Just adding a cup of beans a day can make some big changes."
Edirisinghe and his colleagues enrolled 72 people with prediabetes in a trial that had them consume a cup of chickpeas, black beans, or white rice every day for 12 weeks. At the end of the trial, the cholesterol levels of people on the chickpea diet dropped from about 200 to 186 milligrams per deciliter.
People who consumed chickpeas and black beans also showed reduced markers of inflammation in their blood. Part of the excitement about these health benefits stems from the beans themselves, says study co-author Morganne Smith, also a nutritionist at Illinois Tech.
This could make it relatively easy for people to add more legumes to their cooking./ CNA
