According to an annual report by the Belgian Brewers Association, total beer consumption fell by another 2% in 2024.

According to an annual report from the Belgian Brewers Association, beer consumption in the country fell by 2.1% in 2024, although the decline was not as large as the 6% drop in 2023.

The decline is part of a continuing downward trend, with domestic consumption falling by almost 20% in the past 10 years.

The association cites "continued pressure on purchasing power, reduced competition, high costs and an unstable geopolitical context" as reasons for the decline in consumption.

They also noticed a change in drinking habits and growing health concerns.

"Belgians are drinking less alcohol in general, and therefore, less beer."

But it's not just Belgium, European beer producers have faced long-term decline, as the European Union has experienced a decline in demand for alcoholic beers, a Eurostat report reveals.

Instead, soft drinks are becoming increasingly popular.

"Five years ago, there was only one non-alcoholic beer, now there are six," bar owner Waldo Marlier told local media when speaking about his stock./ CNA
