Colon cancer, symptoms that should not be ignored and who is at risk

Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, affects the large intestine. Lifestyle factors can play a major role in the development of bowel cancer.

People who are overweight or who indulge in unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating high-calorie foods, are at an increased risk of this cancer. Studies say that one can reduce the risk of bowel cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, eating healthily, and avoiding alcohol and smoking.

Recognizing the early signs of bowel cancer can help improve survival rates.

Bowel cancer is a type of cancer that occurs due to abnormal growth of cells in the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum.

Surgeon Balkishan Gupta said that attention should be paid to abdominal cramps, unexplained weight loss and fatigue as all of these symptoms could indicate that you have serious problems.

Dr. Gupta says those most at risk for colorectal cancer are:

– People with a family history of bowel cancer, an inherited bowel condition such as familial adenomatous polyposis, or hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer, also called Lynch syndrome, are more susceptible to developing bowel cancer.

– People with long-term inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis are more likely to be affected by this life-threatening condition.

– Factors such as obesity, smoking, a diet high in processed and red meat, and alcohol use can increase the risk of developing higher rates of bowel cancer.

To minimize the risk of bowel cancer, it is advisable to have a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid or limit your intake of red meat, refrain from eating processed meat, say no to smoking or excessive alcohol consumption, exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight.
