Integration expert Ilda Zhulali said today that Albania is being given an extraordinary opportunity through the opening of group chapters on the path to European integration.
In an interview on 'Syri TV', Zhulali also expressed criticism regarding the processes related to membership, as he focused on the European standards that the country must meet, which he linked to the food security of citizens.
"The direct answer to this was given by the representative of the Danish Presidency, who said that the attention given to Albania and the progress made with it shows that the EU attaches importance to the Western Balkans region and that this has a geostrategic importance for the EU itself. This means that the EU will send a clear message that this space must remain under its influence and that it will not allow the involvement of other influences, especially in the context of what is happening in Ukraine.
Of the opening of the group of chapters, only one remains unopened, which means that all these issues are already on the table for discussion. Let us not forget that Serbia has been opening negotiations with the EU for 11 years and has only closed two chapters, provisionally. Montenegro has opened all chapters and closed 8 of them. This is a process that requires time and a lot of work, both from the countries that want to join, and from the EU.
Albania, I believe, is being given an extraordinary opportunity. It is one of those historical stations that we should have seized more quickly. But, is Rama and his government serious? He really had it as a banner during his campaign, but let's not forget that, first of all, we have the meeting of an Assembly that still does not have full legitimacy. We do not yet have the final report of the OSCE-ODIHR, to tell us whether we had free and fair elections. This legitimacy is missing. We have an unprecedented case, because it has never been delayed this long. It seems that Rama's pressure to influence the change of the report is great, but the legitimacy of the Assembly that has convened is in question.
Rama's first act in the abruptly convened Parliament is to undermine the role of the opposition and violate the Rules of Parliament.
With the opening of the chapters, the Albanian government will not receive applause, but will receive a list of things to fulfill. Unfortunately, despite the fact that a large number of chapters have been opened, we have not seen any serious approach from the government to move seriously towards negotiations. On the contrary, we have seen a catastrophe in food security, which affects the life of every citizen. Because ultimately, EU integration means that the life of the Albanian citizen becomes safer and with European standards.
"But just this month we have seen imported meat with pesticides, chicken with salmonella, expired milk, plague in cattle. These should not happen in a country that claims to join the EU. If these continue, Albania will be subject to huge fines and spectacular punishments, which will ultimately be felt by the citizenry," Zhulali said./CNA
