Who was the "People's Artist", Piro Milkani?

Director Piro Milkani was born on December 9, 1939 and passed away on May 24, 2025.

Piro Milkani was one of the most important figures in Albanian cinematography, with a long career and extraordinary contribution to the art of directing.

After graduating from high school in his hometown, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where he graduated as a film operator.

During his years of study, he made his graduation film, Ingratitude, which marked the beginning of a successful career in cinematography.

After returning to Albania, Milkani began working at the Kinostudio “Shqipëria e Re” as a cinematographer and later as a director. He has made over 20 feature films, including well-known titles such as Victory over Death (1967), Paths of War (1974), Militant (1984), Spring Did Not Come Alone (1988) and The Sadness of Mrs. Shnajder (2006).

For his extraordinary contribution to Albanian cinematography, Milkani has been honored with numerous titles and awards, including the title of "People's Artist" (1987) and the "Ambassador of Albanian Film" medal from the Albanian Ministry of Culture.
