Exclusive - Endocrinologist ?ngjëll Gusho remembers his friend Ahmet

A respected figure in Korçë medicine, surgeon Dr. Ahmet Hoxhallari, has passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a valuable professional and human legacy. He is remembered by his colleagues and friends as a man of strong character, high ethics, and rare dedication to patients and the profession.

In an exclusive interview with CNA TV, endocrinologist Dr. Çngjëll Gusho recalled with longing and respect the long journey of his friend and collaborator. He said that his friendship with Dr. Ahmeti had begun in his youth, on the benches of high school at the Medical Polytechnic of Tirana. They were still teenagers, but united by their passion for medicine and dedication to knowledge. After graduating from school, their paths continued at the Faculty of Medicine, where each pursued his own specialization, one in endocrinology and the other in surgery, but the connection between them was never severed.

After his studies, his professional life took him to different cities and institutions. However, their paths crossed again in a hospital, where they both worked in the same environment. Angel Gusho recalled that Hoxhallari had arrived as a prepared surgeon, confident in his profession, and very quickly gained the respect of his colleagues and patients. He stood out for his ability, concentration, and the humane way in which he treated the sick. Through the experience and authority he gained, he managed to run the hospital himself, leading it with dedication and honesty.

"It's difficult to talk about Dr. Ahmeti. You asked me a question, my acquaintance with him. I will say that I don't remember it because we met at a very young age in high school. We graduated from high school in Tirana, the Medical Polytechnic. Later, we continued as students at the faculty, some in one group, some in another group, but we were both from Korça, he from the Gora area and I from Korça. Later, work connected us in different places, some in a village, some continued their specialties, me for endocrine diseases and Dr. Ahmeti for surgery. Again, at a hospital job, he came as a trained surgeon, I as a doctor, both in a hospital environment. Later, he rose in position, had great success in his profession, became a prominent surgeon who had authority. Later, he also became the hospital director, at the same time consultations were held, whether with surgical diseases, metabolic diseases, endocrine diseases."

In his memoirs, Dr. Gusho mentioned that his relationship with Ahmet Hoxhallari was not only professional, but also personal and human. In addition to working together, they were bound by a mutual respect and care that lasted for decades.

Hoxhallari, besides being a colleague and friend, was also the doctor who operated on Gusho himself at a delicate health moment. Previously, it was Gusho himself who took care of his health, especially the heart problems and diabetes that accompanied him in recent years.

This special relationship, where doctor and patient switch roles, remains a rare testament to the friendship and deep trust that united them.

"He had some health problems, at first he had a heart attack, at that time he was also the hospital director, he also had a disease that had to be treated by me, diabetes. Then I also had a disease, but he said one thing to me: 'As much as I am, come on, get surgery, Angel, because then..." He performed surgery on me, so I had him as a friend, a fellow student, a colleague, I was his doctor, but he was also my doctor, so we were connected to each other. It's hard to actually say more than that."

Angel Gusho also brought a special episode from their shared life in the hospital, where Hoxhallari's strong character and honesty are clearly visible.

As the director of the institution, he was always afraid of overstepping the bounds of justice with the decisions he made, so he wanted honest and just people around him to restrain him if he crossed the boundaries of justice.

This honesty, this care not to violate either professional or human ethics, defines his personality better than any other word.

"You reminded me of something. The work was here, when Dr. Ahmeti became director, the then deputy director didn't want to continue and moved to another position. Ahmeti says to me: 'Will you become deputy director at the hospital?' 'Impossible,' I said, 'because I'm not the type to do that job, let me do other things, but not deputy director.' He said to me: 'If you don't become deputy director, I will fire you.' He had authority. 'I don't care if you fire me, but tell me the reason why you're going to make me deputy director?' "'The deputy director has other things to do, schedules, to be strict with the employees,' I told him. He told me: 'I do that job, better than you, but I worry that I sometimes violate it, I overdo it, but I want you to be the one to hold the reins for me. That's why I want to make you deputy director.' This is not the place to say it, but you reminded me of that. That's how you understand what kind of person he was. He didn't want to violate ethics, whether medical or civil."

At the end of the story, Dr. Gusho described Ahmet Hoxhallari as a figure who will be deeply missed in the life of the city of Korça. He considered him not only an excellent professional who gave a lot to the hospital and patients, but also a man who knew how to maintain friendships, appreciate colleagues and be an example for the younger generations of doctors.

"He was a personality. He will be missed by his family, his friends, his colleagues, those who worked with him, and Korça. Korça also gave him a lot, but he rewarded them."

The passing of Dr. Ahmet Hoxhallari not only marks the loss of a distinguished medical professional, but also of a man who for years served his citizens and colleagues with dedication.

He remains an example of a doctor who lived his profession with passion and integrity, leaving behind strong memories for all who knew and worked with him. His memory will remain alive in the hospital where he served, in the city that loved him, and in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to call him a friend and teacher in his profession and in life./ CNA
