Trump-Zelensky phone call/ Talks on Ukraine's air defense

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation this Friday, agreeing to strengthen Ukraine's air defenses.

The call came as Russia escalated its air campaign across Ukraine, including an attack overnight on July 4 that hit Kiev and several other regions, injuring at least 23 civilians and causing dozens of fires in the capital.

"Today we discussed the situation, the Russian air strikes and, more broadly, the situation on the front lines. President Trump is very well informed. We discussed air defense options and agreed to work on increasing airspace defense. We agreed on a meeting between our teams," Zelensky said.

Zelensky said the two leaders also discussed the potential of Ukraine's defense industry and explored opportunities for direct cooperation with American partners.

The conversation followed a phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 3, during which the Kremlin said Putin reaffirmed that Russia would continue to pursue its goals in its war against Ukraine, despite U.S. calls for a ceasefire. /CNA
