Russia's first moon mission in nearly 50 years was unsuccessful. The Luna-25 probe crashed into the surface of the Moon and ceased to exist, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced.

Two days before the planned landing on the moon, the Russian space probe Luna-25 suffered an unexpected incident, according to authorities. The Russian space agency Roscosmos spoke of a technical defect. After this "unplanned situation", Luna-25 crashed into the lunar surface and ceased to exist, Roscosmos explained. The reasons for this interruption will be clarified.

To prepare to land on the moon's surface, the probe was originally scheduled to enter a new Earth satellite orbit on Saturday. A situation did not allow the maneuver to be carried out according to the planned parameters, it was further learned.

As planned, the probe was supposed to land north of Boguslawski Crater at the Moon's south pole, then stay on the Moon's surface for a year, collecting rock samples there and studying the Moon's surface.

Luna-25 launched last week from Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome towards the Moon. Cameras installed on the probe have already sent the first images of the Earth and the Moon.

This is the first Russian mission to the moon since 1976. With Luna-25, Russia wanted to establish a connection with the Soviet Union's past successes in the field of space travel./DW
