Seven killed in an Israeli attack on a school turned into a shelter

An Israeli attack on a school that had been converted to serve as a shelter in the Gaza Strip killed at least seven people, Palestinian officials say.

The Israeli military said it carried out an attack on Sunday on Hamas militants holed up in the school and accused them of endangering civilians.

Civil Defence, which operates under the government led by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - confirmed the death toll. It did not say whether those killed were fighters or civilians.

The school is located in Shati, a refugee camp built in Gaza City that dates back to the 1948 war. Israeli forces have launched repeated attacks there during the nearly year-long war with Hamas.

Gaza's schools were closed after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war, and most have been turned into shelters. About 90 percent of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been displaced.

Israel says it only targets militants and tries to avoid harming civilians, but rarely comments on specific attacks, which often kill women and children.

The war began when Hamas-led fighters killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in an attack on October 7 in southern Israel. They kidnapped about 250 people and still hold about 100 hostages. Israel's campaign in Gaza has killed at least 41,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians. Also on Saturday, the Gaza Ministry of Health said that five of its employees were killed and five others were wounded by Israeli fire that hit the ministry's warehouses in the Musbah area in the south./ Rel
