Huge fire erupts on Mount Vesuvius volcano / Flames visible from Naples

A huge fire has broken out in the Vesuvius National Park in the western Campania region of Italy.

The situation is critical and to help manage the emergency, the Civil Protection of Kampala has called in the Army to guard the roads, open access routes and supply water to tankers.

The National Department of Civil Protection is also sending a support team to the Terzigno coordination center and is providing air support.

"To combat the flames and provide the greatest possible aerial coverage for suppression activities, six Canadairs from the national firefighting air fleet, coming from different regions and on duty since first light of dawn, are operating on the large fire. In addition to the national fleet, air resources from the regional fleet are also operating on the fire," the Civil Protection Service wrote in a statement issued Saturday./CNA
