Quarry collapse caused by tropical storm/ 17 dead and 12 missing in India

A tragic event took place on Tuesday in northeastern India, where a stone quarry collapsed after a tropical storm, killing 17 quarry workers and leaving 12 others missing, AP reports.

Officials said the bodies of those killed were found at the quarry in Melthum, near the Mizoram state capital, Aizëal.

Some workers were pulled alive from the wreckage while the rescue operation continues to find others trapped, foreign media reports.

Mizoram has a large number of quarries where stone is mined for the construction of roads and buildings, although some companies extract stone without the necessary environmental clearance.

This event is not the only one of its kind as last year, seven workers lost their lives in a similar incident in Mamit town of the state, while in 2022, 12 workers were killed in another case of quarry collapse.

India's northeastern states have been lashed by heavy rains after tropical storm Remal hit Bangladesh.

India's Meteorological Department has warned of possible damage to residential structures and the risk of landslides in the region.
