South Korea resumed megaphone propaganda broadcasts against North Korea in border areas in retaliation for the North sending more than 1,000 balloons filled with debris over the past two weeks.
The action is expected to anger Pyongyang and provoke punitive military measures.
At the conclusion of an emergency security meeting today, South Korean officials announced the restoration of loudspeakers and redistribution of propaganda materials.
South Korea removed megaphones from border areas in 2018, during a brief period of engagement with the North during Seoul's previous liberal government.
South Korean officials accused Pyongyang of seeking to foment "anxiety and uncertainty" by sending balloons containing garbage and trash, underscoring that North Korea would be solely responsible if tensions escalated.
North Korea has said the balloon release was in response to a campaign by South Korean critics and activists who sent across the border balloons carrying anti-Pyongyang leaflets, as well as USB sticks with various music, TV and movie content. or literature of South Korea./ VOA
