Russia called on the United States to clarify what it described as contradictory signals regarding the resumption of nuclear testing, saying such a step would provoke a response from Russia and other states.
Last week, US President Donald Trump ordered the military to immediately resume the process of testing nuclear weapons.
However, he did not make it clear whether this meant testing nuclear-capable missiles or resuming tests that include nuclear bomb explosions. Both countries have not conducted explosive tests for more than three decades.
"If it comes to the latter, it would create negative dynamics and encourage other states to take retaliatory steps, including Russia ," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
"At the moment we note that the signals coming from Washington, which are causing justifiable concern in all parts of the world, remain contradictory and, of course, this issue needs to be clarified."
Citing a lack of clarity about US plans, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday instructed top officials to prepare proposals for Russia to conduct a possible nuclear test in response to any US test.
Russia and the US have the largest nuclear arsenals in the world.
The last remaining treaty between Washington and Moscow, which limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads on both sides, is set to expire in three months.
Putin has proposed that both sides continue to respect the treaty's borders for another year, but Trump has yet to officially respond to this idea. /REL
