Russia calls for caution with "nuclear rhetoric"

Russia called for caution after US President Donald Trump last week announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russia, following an online clash with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump said he ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines because of "extremely provocative statements" made by Medvedev.

The US president did not specify whether it was about submarines equipped with nuclear weapons or only submarines that operate with nuclear power.

He also did not provide details about the location of the submarines, as their locations are kept secret by the US military.

"Russia is very attentive to the issue of nuclear non-proliferation. We believe that everyone should be careful with nuclear rhetoric," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a briefing for reporters on August 4.

The clash between Medvedev and Trump came as the United States gave Russia until August 8 to end its war against Ukraine or face sanctions.

Medvedev told Trump that "every ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but against his state."

Currently, Medvedev is the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia.

Medvedev is known for his provocative and inflammatory statements since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

He has frequently made nuclear threats and insulted Western leaders through social media posts.
