Water pollution at the beach in Portugal / Over 100 people treated for health problems

At least 116 people needed hospital treatment after visiting Portugal's Nazaré beach, in the Leiria district, which was closed to bathers on Friday due to a "technical fault" that caused a spill in storm drains and a foul smell near the coastline.

According to a statement from the Local Health Unit of the Leiria region, sent to Portugal's Lusa agency, 44 children and 26 adults had been visited by doctors, with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea or diarrhea.

The data is not yet fully finalized and the Public Health Unit of the ULS of the Leiria Region is still working on verifying all identified cases, the same statement said.

The mayor of Nazarés, Manuel Sequeira, confirmed that young people in particular were hospitalized with symptoms of gastroenteritis, nausea and vomiting, and that they had in common that they had been to the beach./CNA
