Rubio: Ukraine talks are at an advanced stage, a deal can be reached

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in another statement from Geneva, said talks between the United States and Ukraine on a peace plan are at an advanced stage and have made significant progress. Speaking to reporters, Rubio said he felt optimistic that an agreement could be reached.

"We have made tremendous progress ," he stressed, but avoided giving any specific details about the content of the plan.

Despite the positive rhetoric, he made it clear that this is not yet a final result.

"I don't want to talk about winning or finishing. There's still work to be done, but we're much further ahead today than we were this morning and certainly further ahead than we were a week ago," he said. 

The head of US diplomacy did not mention the Thursday deadline set by Trump for concluding the agreement, saying only that he hopes there will be a result soon.

In response to continued questions from journalists, he reiterated that he would not go into details, as the plan is still under development.

"We just need more time than we have today. I sincerely believe we will get through this," Rubio said at the end of his speech. /CNA
