Europe proposes changes to US plan for Ukraine/ Here are the main points

European leaders have proposed changes to the US peace plan in an attempt to provide a more balanced framework for ending the war in Ukraine.

This proposal by the Europeans comes after the initial US-Russia plan, which included 28 points, had caused strong reactions and was considered too harsh for Kiev, providing, among other things, for the cession of territory and a drastic reduction of the Ukrainian armed forces.

The European counter-proposal, according to a document cited by Reuters, has changed some of the main points of the original plan and includes:

A number of 800,000 soldiers for the Ukrainian army in peacetime, instead of the US proposal of 600,000.

Ukraine's admission to NATO would depend on the consent of all members of the Alliance.

NATO would not maintain permanent forces under its command on Ukrainian territory in peacetime.

Ukraine would be compensated financially, mainly through Russian assets that would remain frozen until Moscow pays reparations for war damages.

Kiev would commit not to retake the occupied territories by military means.

Negotiations on territorial exchanges will begin on the so-called "contact line."

Ukraine will hold elections as soon as possible after the signing of a peace agreement.

Finally, Ukraine will receive security guarantees from the United States, similar to those provided for in NATO's Article 5, i.e. mutual defense in the event of an attack. /CNA
