China refuses/ Does not join the peace conference for Ukraine

China has confirmed it will not attend a conference on peace in Ukraine to be hosted by Switzerland next month, Reuters reports. 

Beijing rejected the invitation because the conditions for their participation were not met, since China was not invited.

The neutral Swiss government is seeking broad participation from around the world for the June 15-16 summit, which Bern hopes will pave the way for a peace process in Ukraine. 

China informed diplomats this week that conditions that were not met included that the conference be recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, there must be equal participation from all sides and there must be fair discussion of all proposals, one of the sources said. .

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested on Thursday that China could organize a peace conference in which Russia and Ukraine could participate.

Ukraine in January invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend a planned summit of world leaders in Switzerland.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy this week asked US President Joe Biden to attend, but Washington has not confirmed who it will send.

China has close ties to Russia and has not criticized its invasion of Ukraine, but has previously offered to help mediate the conflict./ CNA
