Samsung workers in South Korea go on strike for the first time

Workers at tech giant Samsung Electronics in South Korea launched their first ever strike on Friday.

Samsung Electronics is one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers, and one of the few companies in the world that manufactures the chips needed to perform many technological functions.

The company's management has been negotiating with the unions for workers' salaries since January, but the parties have not reached a solution.

"The first strike at Samsung Electronics is taking place today through taking time off, and we understand that many workers are participating," said Son Woo-mok, head of the labor union.

The company has said that such an action will not have an impact on production and other business activities.

About 10 workers were seen outside Samsung's offices in Seoul on Friday shouting: Respect the work. We don't want a 6.5 percent increase or a 200 percent bonus."

Samsung Electronics is part of the conglomerate Samsung Group, which dominates the business sphere in South Korea, the fourth largest economy in Asia./REL
