President Biden begins his visit to Saudi Arabia
President Joe Biden arrived in Saudi Arabia

US President Joe Biden arrived in Saudi Arabia on Friday for talks on energy, human rights and security cooperation, in a visit aimed at revitalizing the United States' relationship with a country that Mr. Biden had described as unwanted in the international arena.

Energy and security interests drove the decision by the president and his advisers not to isolate the country, which is a major oil exporter and a major regional power that has recently strengthened ties with Russia and China.

Mr. Biden will discuss energy security with the leaders of Gulf oil producers and hopes to see more action from OPEC to increase production, but U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters while traveling from Israel to Jeddah that there was unlikely to be any bilateral announcement from the talks.

Mr Biden's trip is being watched closely and will test his ability to restore relations with the powerful crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

The US investigation had concluded that the crown prince had directly approved the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, while the crown prince denies having a role in the murder. VOA
