Former President of the United States Jimmy Carter died on Sunday at the age of 100. America's longest-serving president died at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died at age 96 in November 2023, spent most of their lives, the Carter Center reported. .
"Our founder, former US President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon on the Plains of Georgia," the center said in a post about his death on social media platform X. The statement said he died peacefully. , surrounded by his family.
After a term in the White House, the 39th President of the United States committed himself to causes ranging from health to global democracy and more.
When Jimmy Carter took the oath of office on January 20, 1977, he promised "good government, just like the American people."
President Jimmy Carter, 1977 Inaugural Address
"There can be no nobler and more ambitious task for America, in this day of a new beginning, than to help shape a just and peaceful world," he said.
A world he continued to contribute to beyond his single term in the White House, becoming a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He is the founder of the Carter Center, a global non-profit organization whose mission is "to spread peace and hope and fight disease."
"I see the work of the Carter Center as a continuation of what I tried to do as president," he said in 2007.
Mr. Carter was born in Plains, Georgia in 1924. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1946, serving as a submarine officer before returning to Plains in 1953 to run the family farm after his father's death.
The former president entered politics during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He served two terms as a Georgia legislator before becoming the state's governor in 1971.
"I tell you frankly that the time for racial discrimination is over," he said in a speech during his inauguration as governor of Georgia in 1971.
He went from an obscure southern governor in 1971 to the winning presidential candidate in 1976, narrowly defeating Republican Gerald Ford.
The mediation of the Camp David Accords in 1979 and the final peace treaty between Egypt and Israel was the highlight of his presidency.
"Over the past 25 years there have been four wars between the Arabs and the Israelis, with the Egyptians in the lead, supported by the Soviet Union. Egypt was the only country that could challenge Israel militarily," Mr. Carter said in a statement in 2009.
"I would like to see the United States in the future as a world champion for peace, human rights and environmental quality, and I would say treating everyone as equal. If we can do that, we would have a real superpower in the country, which I love very much," he said in 2019./VOA
