Massive flooding in Bohum, Czech Republic/ Dam management averts a bigger

The city of Bohumin has had its worst night since 1997. The river Odra has flooded almost the entire city. Due to the floods, there were also power outages. The dams saved the city from a greater disaster.

But not only Bohumin, but other villages and towns could have been affected by a much worse flood if the dams had not held back the water.

Even on Sunday morning, it was predicted that there would be a surge of up to 1,800 cubic meters of water per second in Bohum. In the end, it was only about 1200 cubic meters, thus having a lower water level.

Bretislav Turecek, Technical Director of Odra stated that:

"The water management system of the Odra River has played a key role since the beginning of this situation. All reservoirs were released before the onset of rain and flooding, so very significantly and practically they were able to keep us afloat, even though the water was everywhere, but there is minimal flow under those reservoirs. You could say that if it wasn't for this system, we would really have a bigger flood."

David Biegun the mayor of Terlicko said that:

"Around two-thirty in the morning we were forced to declare the third stage of the flood, which also means that we had to evacuate the entire area or inform everyone to evacuate. Unfortunately, some refused and the whole situation made it even more complicated, because Stonávka recorded new historical values, namely a total height of 416 centimeters and a flow of over 130 cubic meters. Unfortunately, these high values ??forced even those who did not want to leave their homes at half past two in the morning, they were evacuated."

Thanks to the dams, even Frydek-Mostek was protected from a greater disaster. Managers diverted some of the water from the Beskydy, which would have flowed into the town of Ostravici.

Bretislav Turecek, technical director of the Odra River said that " To relieve the flood wave in Frydek-Mistek, the capacity of Zermanicky rivadech was used. 50 cubic meters were taken from Moravka to Zermanice, which was prepared for it, and thus the peak wave was reduced. This was another element of that system that worked at the right time and the way it was supposed to work."
