Since Saturday morning, the Palestinian group Hamas has launched an unprecedented attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip, from the ground and from the air.

This is the biggest attack on Israel in years, a surprise attack that, in addition to hundreds of rockets being fired, armed men infiltrated Israel. 

A number of militants from Gaza have also entered Israeli territory, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said, warning Israelis living near Gaza to stay in their homes.

Foreign media reports that 5,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. So far, 1 victim and three injured have been reported.

Muhammad Al-Deif, the military commander of Hamas, called for a general uprising against Israel in a recorded message on Saturday.

"If you have a gun, this is the time to use it - come out with trucks, cars, axes. Today begins the best and most honorable history," he said.

The Israel Defense Forces say they are mobilizing soldiers and calling up reservists as they declare a "state of war readiness".
