Former President Donald Trump announced his support for Jim Jordan to take over as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives following the impeachment of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, as fractious House Republicans try to unify after Mr. McCarthy's historic ouster. .
Mr. Jordan faces a challenge from lawmaker Steve Scalise, the No. 2 House Republican, long considered Mr. McCarthy's successor.
IN THE RACE: JIM JORDAN

Lawmaker Jim Jordan, a longtime ally of Mr. Trump, was endorsed by some far-right members of Congress for the House speaker during the January election. He received 20 votes during one round of voting. He had also challenged Mr McCarthy in a minority leadership race in 2018.
Mr. Jordan, who represents a district in Ohio, is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, one of three key panels involved in the investigation into whether there are grounds for impeachment against President Joe Biden.
Mr. Jordan clashed publicly with Democrats over their investigations into then-President Donald Trump.
In a letter to colleagues, he called for the group of Republican lawmakers to come together, writing, "We can focus on changes that improve the country and bring us together to deliver real solutions."
IN THE RACE: STEVE SCALISE

Lawmaker Matt Gaetz, who led the effort to oust Mr. McCarthy, has said he would support colleague Steve Scalise for the job.
The latter announced his candidacy through a letter addressed to his colleagues.
The Louisiana lawmaker was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire at a 2017 Republican Congressional Baseball Team practice.
He may face questions from the caucus about his health after announcing in August he was being treated for a form of blood cancer.
He was criticized for a 2002 speech about a white supremacist group linked to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Mr. Scalise has said he was wrong and regretted it.
POSSIBLE CANDIDATES: KEVIN HERN

Kevin Hern is chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of conservative Republicans. He told reporters that some lawmakers had asked him to consider running and suggested he would be open to it.
However, the Oklahoma lawmaker may have trouble attracting support from moderates.
POSSIBLE CANDIDATES: PATRICK MCHENRY

Legislator Patrick McHenry was appointed to hold the role of interim chairman following Mr McCarthy's dismissal. The chairman of the House Financial Services Committee is an ally of Mr. McCarthy, who spoke in support of him before the impeachment vote.
Patrick McHenry, a lawmaker from North Carolina, has said he does not want the post, but supporters could push him to run if other candidates lose support./ VOA
