Mitsotakis' 'offer' to farmers/ 160 million euros in exchange for

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pledged 160 million euros to farmers to reopen roads that have been blocked for days, while announcing additional support for them during a lengthy parliamentary debate that ended with the approval of the 2026 budget.

Addressing lawmakers, Mitsotakis structured his speech around four main pillars. First, he emphasized political and democratic stability, describing it as an intangible national asset.

Second, he pursued a dual approach towards the opposition, criticizing it for agricultural policy while at the same time inviting it to participate in an inter-party commission on the primary sector.

Third, he introduced a package of measures on housing.

Fourth, he focused on the ongoing mobilizations of farmers, announcing 160 million euros in additional funds and signaling a roll-call vote on the transfer of the agricultural payment agency OPEKEPE to the tax authority AADE.

At the same time, the Prime Minister proposed the creation of an inter-party committee with an inter-party presidium. The committee would work within a four-month deadline to identify the problems faced by farmers and producers and to produce consensual and binding proposals applicable to future governments. /CNA
