A powerful earthquake hits Taiwan

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has struck off Taiwan's east coast, followed by earthquakes of lower intensity, the island's authorities said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was about 30 kilometers off the coast of Hualien, with a depth of six kilometers.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.9 and a depth of 12 kilometers.

There are still no reports of damage or casualties.

"The earthquake was felt all over Taiwan because its depth was small," said Chen Kuo-chang, head of Taiwan's seismological center.

"Eight aftershocks have also been recorded and we expect more tremors in the coming days," he added.

Authorities operating the rail and metro system said trains will slow down but services will not be interrupted.

Taiwan is often hit by earthquakes, as this island is located near where two tectonic plates meet.

Some earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more can be deadly, although a lot depends on where the epicenter is and how deep the earthquake is.

In September, Taiwan's east coast was hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake, killing one person and toppling several buildings./REL
