Extreme weather from storm Goretti paralyzes Western European countries

Strong winds, snow and freezing temperatures have battered large parts of Western Europe after Storm Goretti hit. Weather experts issued severe warnings in several countries.

In southwest England, officials issued a rare wind warning, with speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour and dangerous conditions near the sea.

In France, strong winds caused power outages and many homes lost electricity.

In northern Germany, heavy snow and wind caused major problems. Some areas had up to 20 centimeters of snow, which suspended classes in schools.

Authorities urged people to avoid traveling because roads and trails became unsafe. Workers used a lot of snowplows and spread salt to make the roads safer.

Rail services in northern Germany were operating less frequently and airports warned of delays and cancellations. /CNA
