Moscow claims to have conquered Bakhmut / Kiev says the battle is not over

Russia claims to have taken control of the city of Bakhmut, but senior Ukrainian military leaders say the battle for the city is not over.

For nine months, Bakhmuti has been the scene of fierce fighting, where tens of thousands of soldiers lost their lives.

Ukrainian officials admit that their forces control only a small part of the city.

Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said Monday that Ukrainian troops continue to control some suburban areas southwest of Bakhmut as the battle continues.

" The enemy's offensive capabilities have been significantly reduced. The enemy has suffered heavy losses. We have gained time to carry out certain actions, which will be announced later," said Mrs. Maliar.

Kiev says the current positions of its troops and the significant advances they are making on the outskirts of the city will allow them to encircle Russian troops inside Bakhmut.

Fierce fighting makes it impossible to confirm the situation on the ground. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that mercenaries of the 'Wagner' group, supported by Russian troops, had occupied the city, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Bakhmuti had not been fully occupied./ VOA
