Fierce fighting in Bakhmut

The city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, was engulfed in fierce fighting today as the months-long battle for its control continues.

Ukraine's military said it is using artillery, tanks and other weaponry to repel Russian attempts to take the city.

According to a recent assessment by the British Ministry of Defence, the Russian paramilitary group 'Wagner' controls most of the eastern part of Bakhmut, while Ukrainian forces control the western part of the city.

On Sunday, Wagner group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin described the situation as very difficult, with fighting getting tougher the closer his forces get to the city center.

Russia has targeted Bakhmut as part of its broader objective to capture the Donbass region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to protect Bakhmut, while officials from several allied countries, including US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as well as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, have warned that if Kiev were to lose Bakhmut, it would not would mark a turning point in the conflict./ VOA
