Greater EU solidarity is called for in housing Ukrainian refugees

The leader of the European People's Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, has called for more European solidarity in accommodating Ukrainian refugees.

"If more Ukrainians are forced to flee during the winter due to Russian bombings and attacks, then Western Europe must take more responsibility," Weber told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

It was an "unprecedented challenge" that had to be met with "solidarity", the German politician was quoted as saying.

According to the UN, some 7.9 million people from Ukraine have so far sought protection abroad because of the war that began on February 24.

Of these, slightly more than 1 million are registered in Germany, according to the Ministry of the Interior of this country. About 119,000 refugees have been registered in France, about 173,000 in Italy and about 154,000 in Spain, DPA reports.

Poland further east has hosted the majority, with more than 1.5 million Ukrainians.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson told the same newspaper that "Member States that still have capacity are clearly stepping up their efforts to help Member States that are at their accommodation limits".

Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have raised serious fears of a winter without proper heating or electricity./REL
