Citizens from Albania and Kosovo continue to lead with a clear difference from other countries of the Balkan region in terms of requests for asylum in the countries of the European Union.
According to the latest data of the European Asylum Agency (EUAA), during the month of September of this year, 586 new requests for asylum were submitted from Albania and 584 requests from Kosovo.
The number of asylum requests of Albanian citizens from Kosovo and Albania during the month of September is significantly higher compared to other countries in the region where 286 asylum requests were submitted from North Macedonia to one of the European Union countries, 252 from Serbia, from Bosnia Herzegovina 252 and from Montenegro only 46 requests.
The number of requests for asylum of Albanian citizens in the countries of the European Union in the first nine months of this year has reached about 5,500.
From the data published earlier by the European Asylum Agency, about 2700 requests of citizens from Albania collected during the past year are waiting to be examined.
Requests for asylum of Albanian citizens in the highest number continue in the two neighboring countries Italy and Greece, but also in France and Germany.
The European Asylum Agency (EUAA) said that asylum authorities in the European Union received 84,000 asylum applications from citizens of various nationalities in September this year.
Requests are in stable numbers in recent months, but by a third less compared to the peak of last fall, says the European Asylum Agency.
According to the EUAA the number of cases awaiting a first instance decision continued to rise, reaching 969,000 at the end of September 2024, which is the highest in the last eight years.
The Asylum Agency said that by the end of September 2024, around 4.3 million people had benefited from temporary protection in the European Union after fleeing Russia's occupation of Ukraine. Most of the beneficiaries were received by Germany and Poland, but the Czech Republic received more beneficiaries per capita, says the European Asylum Agency./ VOA
