The former European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, is under investigation as he is suspected of being involved in money laundering.
Didier Reynders is at the center of a new criminal scandal that has engulfed Brussels.
Belgian authorities suspect that the politician has been involved for years in a money laundering scheme involving lottery tickets and cash of unknown origin. Reynders has already been questioned by prosecutors and police have raided some of his properties. He has yet to respond to the latest allegations. Reynders survived the chaotic nature of Belgian politics and managed to hold the powerful position until 2011, serving under four different prime ministers, including Herman Van Rompuy, who would later become the first president of the European Commission.
Born in Liège, a city in the French-speaking region of Wallonia, Belgium, Reynders studied law and began his career as a lawyer before entering politics. He joined the Mouvement Reformateur (MR), Wallonia's liberal party, and rose through the ranks to become finance minister in 1999./ CNA
