Ex-crypto boss pleads guilty to fraud, betrayed by friends and ex-girlfriend in courtroom

Sam Bankman-Fried, who once ran one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has been found guilty of fraud and money laundering during a trial in New York, the BBC reports  . 

The jury delivered its verdict after five hours of deliberations. Bankman-Fried was arrested last year after his firm, FTX, went bankrupt. The sentence for the well-known businessman, who is charged with 7 charges, is expected to be handed down on March 28 next year.

"Sam Bankman-Fried perpetrated one of the largest financial frauds in American history — a multibillion-dollar scheme designed to make him the king of crypto," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement after the verdict.

Prosecutors accused Bankman-Fried of lying to investors and lenders and stealing billions of dollars from cryptocurrency exchange FTX, helping precipitate its collapse. 

Three of his former friends and close colleagues, including his ex-girlfriend Caroline Ellison, pleaded guilty and agreed to testify against him in hopes of reducing their sentences./ CNA
