Powerful earthquake strikes Indonesia, one person dies

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Molucca Sea near Indonesia's Ternate island on Thursday morning, causing at least one death. The quake struck at around 06:48 local time (22:48 GMT) at a depth of 35 km and triggered tsunami warnings, which were later lifted.

A 70-year-old woman in North Sulawesi died after being crushed by the rubble of a building, while another person was injured jumping from a building. Some residents said it was among the strongest earthquakes they have experienced in the past six years.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned that waves of up to 0.3 meters could hit the coasts of Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Papua Guinea, the Philippines and Taiwan, but the warning was lifted after two hours.

The main quake was followed by at least two aftershocks, measuring 5.5 and 5.2, and authorities warned of more aftershocks. In the cities of Manado and Bitung, as well as on the volcanic island of Ternate, many residents reported power outages and panic during the quake.

Geological authorities reported "damage to buildings and injuries," while search and rescue teams in Manado went to the scene to help residents and assess the damage, dealing with rubble and objects displaced by the powerful tremors.

Residents and hospital staff in the area were forced to evacuate buildings and treat the injured in temporary facilities, experiencing moments of panic and fear of possible aftershocks. /CNA
