Historic for Syria/ The first military parade since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad

Syrians marked the first anniversary of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime and his iron rule on Monday, as a military parade took place in Damascus symbolizing the country's efforts to find stability and recovery after years of war.

Official celebrations are planned for the central Umayyad Square in Damascus, which has been filled with joyous gatherings ahead of December 8, and in other parts of the country, where military parades are also expected.

Al-Assad fled Syria for Russia a year ago, as opposition fighters commanded by Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, captured Damascus and ended his rule, more than 13 years in a war that resulted from an uprising against Assad.

Sharaa promised on this first anniversary that she would build a just and strong Syria.

"From north to south and from east to west, God willing, we will rebuild a strong Syria with a structure that suits its present and its past," Sharaa said.

Sharaa marked the occasion by performing dawn prayers at Damascus' Umayyad Mosque this morning, according to the official SANA news agency. He was dressed in military uniforms similar to those he wore during the victorious campaign led by his Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group. /CNA
