Germany calls for investigation into reported poisoning of girls in Iranian

Reports of the poisoning of girls in schools in Iran are shocking and should be fully investigated, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on March 3rd.

Germany's statement comes after that of the United States of America, which expressed concern about these reports.

Hundreds of Iranian girls in various schools have suffered "mild poisoning" in recent months, according to Iran's Health Minister Saeed Namaki. Also, some politicians say they may have been targeted by religious groups opposed to girls' education.

"Girls should be able to go to school without fear," Baerbock tweeted. "All cases must be fully investigated."

The first incident is believed to have occurred in November, when 18 schoolgirls in the city of Qom were taken to a hospital after complaining of symptoms such as headaches, coughing, difficulty breathing, palpitations and numbness in the hands and feet.

Yesterday, the United Nations children's agency (UNICEF) said it was ready to offer support to Iran to help resolve a growing crisis after a mysterious illness hospitalized dozens of schoolchildren./REL
