Bashar al Assad speaks for the first time: I have not thought of leaving Syria

The former president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, spoke for the first time after his departure to Russia.

Assad's reported statement was posted on the Telegram channel owned by the Syrian presidency, although it is not clear who currently controls the channel.

In it he says that, as the Syrian capital fell to rebels, he went to the Russian military base in his stronghold in Latakia province "to supervise combat operations" only to find that Syrian troops had abandoned the positions.

The Hmeimim base was also under "intensified attack by drone strikes" and the Russians had decided to move it to Moscow.

He adds that at no time during these events did he think of withdrawing or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal made by any individual or party./ CNA
